The red eye or subconjunctival haemorrhage is the red spot or patch appearing on the white of the eye beneath the conjunctiva. It may vary in extent from small petechial haemorrhage to an extensive one spreading under the whole of the bulbar conjunctiva. This is also known as ecchymosis of the conjunctiva.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF RED EYE  

  • Redness of eyes – looks like a flat sheet of homogeneous bright red colour with well-defined limits

CAUSES OF RED EYE  

  • Trauma
  • Inflammations of the conjunctiva
  • Sudden venous congestion of the head
  • Spontaneous rupture of fragile capillaries
  • Local vascular anomalies
  • Bleeding disorders
  • Infections like malaria, typhoid, diphtheria

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF RED EYE  

Red eye may be associated with the above-mentioned conditions. Most of the time it is absorbed completely within 7to21 to days. During absorption, colour changes are noted from bright red to orange then yellow. In severe cases, some pigmentation may be left behind after absorption.

DIAGNOSIS OF RED EYE  

  •  Proper examination of eyes by the physician
  • Laboratory tests to find out the underlying pathology

TREATMENTS OF RED EYE  

  • Treatment of underlying pathology
  • Eye drops
  • No treatment is required in most the cases
  • Cold compresses to check to bleed

PROGNOSIS OF RED EYE  

  • Red eye is a self-limiting condition. Most of the time it is absorbed completely within 7 to 21  days.

COMPLICATIONS OF RED EYE  

  • Red eye will not cause any complications unless it is associated with trauma to the eye

  • As per Ayurveda, it can be correlated with ‘urdhwagata raktapitta’

DIET AND BEHAVIOUR FOR RED EYE  

  • Avoid food items that produce dosha imbalance like cold, unctuous food, hard to digest. Because dosha imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Consume a balanced diet rich in vitamin A 
  • Avoid exposure to sunlight
  • Avoid exposure to dust and smoke

YOGA FOR RED EYE  

  • Nadi shuddi pranayam    – calms the mind and gets relief from the eye irritations associated with red eye  

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, and the body relaxed. The patient has to close one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
