SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF SEBACEOUS CYST

  • Lump with central blackhead
  • Generally painless
  • Soft to touch
  • When infected it becomes tender, red and foul-smelling drainage occur

CAUSES OF SEBACEOUS CYST

  • Blockage in the sebaceous duct
  • Damaged or deformed sebaceous duct
  • Genetic diseases like Gardner’s syndrome

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF SEBACEOUS CYST

The sebaceous gland produces sebum that gives oil coating to the skin and hair. Sebaceous cysts are formed when there is stagnation of sebum occurs due to the above-mentioned causes.

TREATMENTS FOR SEBACEOUS CYST

  • Surgical removal of cyst – conventional wide excision, minimal excision
  • Antibiotics
  • Treatment of underlying pathology

PROGNOSIS OF SEBACEOUS CYST

  • Generally, it resolves spontaneously over time. If it is infected need treatment and a complete cure occur.

COMPLICATIONS OF SEBACEOUS CYST

  • Infected sebaceous cysts become painful.

  • Cold application on inflamed area advised. Which alleviates pitta dosha

YOGA FOR SEBACEOUS CYST

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam    – calms the mind and gets relief from irritations associated with sebaceous cysts

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, and the body relaxed. The patient has to close one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
