SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF ISCHEMIC COLITIS

  • Diarrhoea
  • Bloody stools
  • Sometimes the passage of blood without stools

CAUSES OF ISCHEMIC COLITIS

  • Atherosclerosis
  • Bowel obstructions due to tumour etc.
  • Chronic constipation

  • Vasculitis (inflammation of blood vessels)

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF ISCHEMIC COLITIS

Ischemic colitis occurs when the blood supply to the part of the colon is temporarily reduced due to the above-mentioned causes. The pathophysiology of ischemic colitis is more often an acute, self-limited decrease in blood supply rather than a specific vascular lesion or embolic event. Finally, the symptoms are manifested.

DIAGNOSIS OF ISCHEMIC COLITIS

  • Faecal occult blood testing
  • Colonoscopy is the ‘gold standard’ method of detecting intra-luminal colonic lesions. 
  • Sigmoidoscopy
  • Angiogram

  • Symptoms are manageable in the early stage. Undiagnosed and untreated ischemic colitis leads to complications.

  • Gangrene formation (tissue death)
  • Perforation of the colon
  • Ischemic stricture

DIET AND BEHAVIOUR FOR ISCHEMIC COLITIS

  • Avoid food items that produce dosha imbalance like cold and dry food, hard to digest. Because dosha imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Consume easily digestible food items
  • Intake of more water and dietary fibres, goat’s milk

YOGA FOR ISCHEMIC COLITIS

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam    – calms the mind and is effective in abdominal discomfort

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
