SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF JAUNDICE

  • Fever
  • Anorexia
  • Bad taste in the mouth
  • Fatigue
  • Yellow discolouration in the skin, mucous membrane, sclera
  • Chills
  • Abdominal pain
  • Vomiting
  • Dark  urine 
  •  Pale coloured stool

CAUSES OF JAUNDICE

  • Hepatitis ( viral infection)
  • Haemolytic anaemia
  • Certain medications
  • Metabolic problems
  • Alcohol
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Gall bladder disorders

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF JAUNDICE

In case of jaundice due to haemolytic anaemia when there is abnormally increased destruction of red blood cells (hemolysis) or liver diseases like hepatitis, that reduces the ability of the liver to remove and modify bilirubin, or obstruction to the flow of bile into the intestine due to gall bladder stone etc.

DIAGNOSIS OF JAUNDICE

  • Blood test
  • Urine analysis
  • Liver function test
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Abdominal ultrasonography (ultrasound)
  • Computerized tomography (CT) scan, or computerized axial tomography (CAT) scan

TREATMENTS FOR JAUNDICE

  • Treatment of underlying pathology.
  •  A few cases may require surgery.
  • Medications – antiviral drugs for hepatitis
  • Iron supplements for haemolytic anaemia

PROGNOSIS OF JAUNDICE

  • Prognosis is based on the cause of the disease, duration  and condition of the patient

COMPLICATIONS OF JAUNDICE

  • Acute bilirubin encephalopathy
  • Infections
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Swelling of legs
  • Liver failure
  • Kidney failure

JAUNDICE AND AYURVEDA

  • In Ayurveda,Jaundice is similar to ‘kamala’.
  • It is considered as a yakrit vikara (liver disease)

NIDANA- AYURVEDIC CAUSES OF JAUNDICE

  • Excess consumption of sour food
  • Excess aggravation of pitta dosha
  • Pandu – anaemia

  • Patient with pandu who indulges in things which cause an increase of pitta, the pitta gets increased, burns up the blood and muscles, produces kamala(jaundice).

  • Haaridra netra mutra twak – yellow discolouration of eyes, urine, skin
  • Daha – burning sensation
  • Avipaka – indigestion
  • Thirst – trishna

  • If we neglect the kamala it may lead to kumbha kamala; which is difficult to cure.

  • Take proper rest.

YOGA FOR JAUNDICE

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam    – refresh the body and mind

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
