Rumalaya Forte Tablet
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease which affects many people worldwide. It is a type of disease caused when the body attacks its own tissues instead of fighting off foreign matters. It specifically attacks the synovium, a thin membrane that lines the joints, causing fluid buildup in the joints. This causes inflammation and pain in the joints. It often starts in the small joints of the hands and feet but can progress to other parts of the body too as the disease advances. If not diagnosed and treated in time, it can lead to heart failure, stroke, coronary artery disease, etc.
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease which commonly affects older people. In this disease, the cartilage which covers the ends of a bone in a joint breaks down. The breaking down of cartilage results in limited movement, pain and irritation in the joints. The most commonly affected joints are the back, hips, knees and feet. However, it can affect joints in the neck and fingers.
Symptoms of RA and osteoarthritis
Although rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are both diseases which affect joints, the similarity stops here. The symptoms of the two vary and require specific treatments. A correct diagnosis is required for the proper treatment of the disease.
Symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis | Symptoms of osteoarthritis |
Joints get swollen and stiff in the morning | Ache in joints |
Joint pain that lasts longer than a week | Joints feel tender when applying light pressure |
Dryness of the eyes, mouth, nose, throat, or skin | Crunching or grating sound when using a joint |
Hard to heal injuries | Unable to use the full movement of the joint |
Tingling in the wrists and hands | Stiffness in the joints after long periods of inactivity |
Ayurveda and arthritis
According to Ayurveda, arthritis is caused by the buildup of ama (toxins) and the decrease in agni (the metabolic fire) which aids in digestion. When food remains undigested due to reduction in agni, it gets turned into ama which then circulates in the body causing blockages in the tissues and capillaries. When ama gets deposited in the joints, it causes pain, inflammation and stiffness.
Classification of arthritis according to Ayurveda
Ayurvedic treatment of arthritis depends on the type of arthritis a person has. There are three types of arthritis according to Ayurveda:
The vata arthritis – In this type of arthritis, the body’s autoimmune system is triggered causing the joints to get affected. This leads to inflammation, stiffness and pain. Hot baths and abyhanga (oil massage) with sesame oil is the treatment recommended.
The pitta arthritis – In this type of arthritis, the pitta dosha is aggravated causing swelling or burning sensation in the joints. Cool compresses and massages with coconut oil are recommended for this type of arthritis.
The kapha arthritis – In this type of arthritis, the joints feel cold and clammy to touch and become stiff and swollen. Hot baths and massages with almond oil are recommended.
In order to treat arthritis, Ayurvedic physicians recommend ways to rid the body of ama and stimulate agni to improve digestion. Depending on the type of arthritis and the prakirti (constitution) of a person, treatments including cleansing, detoxification and herbal formulations are prescribed to the patient.
