PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF VIRAL INFECTIONS
In viral infection proliferation of virus inside the body occur. Viruses cannot reproduce without the assistance of a host. Viruses infect a host by introducing their genetic material into the cells. Fever is the main symptom of viral infections. Fever is an elevation in body temperature regulated by the hypothalamic thermoregulatory centre. The purpose of a fever is to enhance immune function and inhibit pathogen growth.
DIAGNOSIS OF VIRAL INFECTIONS
- History taking
- Physical examinations
- Blood tests
- Detection of specific antiviral antibodies
- Detection of virus-specific IgM antibodies
TREATMENTS OF VIRAL INFECTIONS

VIRAL INFECTIONS AND AYURVEDA
- In Ayurveda, viral infections are managed based on the symptoms. Fever is a common symptom; hence ‘jwara chikilsa” can be adopted.
NIDANA- AYURVEDIC CAUSES OF VIRAL INFECTIONS
- Agantu factors – infections
PURVAROOPAM- AYURVEDIC PREMONITORY SYMPTOMS OF VIRAL INFECTIONS
- Increased body temperature
- Weakness
SAMPRAPTI – AYURVEDIC PATHOGENESIS OF VIRAL INFECTIONS
Due to the aganthu factors (viral infection) doshas become vitiated and spreads to the entire body. Aggravated doshas enter the digestive system and combine with agni, accompanying the rasa, blocks the channels. Agni expels out from the site of digestion and spreads all over the body and gives rise to jwara.

YOGA FOR VIRAL INFECTIONS
- Nadi Shuddi Pranayam – calms the mind, clears the respiratory passage and gets relief from the complications associated with viral infections
The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
