Jatyadi ghritam is a herbo-mineral ghee preparation said in Ayurveda. It is described in Vrana chikitsa of Ashtanga Hridaya Uttarasthana. This formulation is only used for external application and not taken internally. It contains the mineral drug Tutha (copper sulphate). It is used externally for wound healing. It can either be applied externally or can be used for dressing wound.
Jatyadi ghrita is found to be effective in healing wounds of vital points, Vrana (ulcer) in fistula-in-anus, diabetic ulcer, and other deep seated and non-healing ulcers. Now most of the pharmacies are manufacturing ointment using Jatyadi ghrita for the ease of application and customer acceptance.
INDICATIONS
The indication of Jatyadi ghrita includes,
- Vrana (ulcer) with small openings, situated on the vital spots
- Ulcer with exudation
- Deep seated ulcer which is painful
- Sinus ulcers.

METHOD OF PREPARATION
The kashaya is prepared with the drugs said in the formulation. This kashaya is taken as the liquid medium in preparing ghee.
The powder of the drugs made into fine paste and added to the ghee.
Proportion of drugs
- Ghee – one part
- Decoction of drugs- 4 parts
- Paste of drugs- 1/6 part.
The ghee is collected when the kalka attains sand appearance that is Khara paka(that stage when paste of drug is rough to touch with no moisture). This end point of cooking is considered because it is used for external application.

Generally the drugs of Jathyadi ghrita have Pitta kapha samana (alleviating) property. Bitter and kashaya rasa have action in wound healing. Copper sulphate is shown to have strong antimicrobial properties. Copper promotes the growth of new blood vessels and thus helping in wound healing .
DOSAGE:
Sufficient quantity of ghee is applied on ghee. In other case a cloth soaked in ghee can be spread over the wound.
EXERCISE AND YOGA
No exercise can be done in the non-healing ulcer cases. But breathing exercise like Anulom viloma pranayama and meditation can be done to maintain the health of body and mind.
APATHYAS DURING THE USE OF JATYADI GHRITA
Since this medicated ghee preparation is only used externally no apathyas or things to be avoided are said during its usage. The things said to be avoided in ulcer patients can be avoided. It includes,
- Newly harvested cereals and grains
- Black gram, sesame seeds, horse gram
- Inappropriate or excessive eating
- Incompatible foods
- Dried meat and vegetables
PATHYA AHARAS AND VIHARAS
No specific regimen is said in the classics during its usage. But since it is used in ulcer cases the do’s and don’ts in case of ulcer should be followed for the proper healing of wound. It includes,
- Old stored rice
- Meat of animals of arid region
- Leafy vegetable like Leptadenia reticulata (jeevanti), Tanduleeyaka (Amaranthus), Chenopodium album (vastuka), etc.
- Vegetables like Brinjal, bitter variety of snake gourd, bitter gourd, greengram
- Pomegranate, gooseberries
- Rock salt
