SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF BEDSORES 

  • The following symptoms are experienced on the pressure bearing areas of the body like coccyx, heel, hip, ankles.

CAUSES OF BEDSORES 

  • The pressure exerted on the skin for a long duration
  • Lying in bed for a long duration
  • Sitting in a wheelchair for a long duration

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF BEDSORES 

Prolonged pressure exerted on the body is the main cause of a decubitus ulcer with other factors such as moisture, poor circulation, and poor nutrition contributing. Lying on a certain body part for long periods may cause the skin to break down. The areas around the hips, ankles, heels, and coccyx are vulnerable to pressure sores.

DIAGNOSIS OF BEDSORES 

  • Proper history taking
  • Bedsores are diagnosed by the proper inspection of the site

TREATMENTS FOR BEDSORES 

  • Pressure on the affected area removed first
  • Treatment for the wound
  • Removing the damaged, infected, or dead tissue (debridement)
  • Antibiotics to control infections

PROGNOSIS OF BEDSORES 

  • Bedsores need more time to heal in persons with underlying pathology like diabetes

COMPLICATIONS OF BEDSORES             

  • Infection may spread to the whole body
  • Cellulitis
  • Sepsis

  • In Ayurveda,bedsores can be managed based on the treatment of ‘dushta vrana’.

  • Aganthu factors – infections, injuries
  • Excess vitiation of doshas and dhatus
  • Obstruction in the raktavaha srothas

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
